Alphabet Games Complete
Alphabet games – L is for luck
The Alphabet Games project is now complete and this slideshow contains all 26 images. I originally wrote about the project here. Put simply, a few of us over on Google Plus have been taking a photograph a day relating themed around a letter of the alphabet; A on day one through to Z on day 26.
The images can be viewed large and/or downloaded from here .
A quick thought about the project
Up until now I have been fairly skeptical regarding these photograph a day type projects. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by just how much I learned from this one. The gained knowledge was not so much about photography (although I did learn some things) but rather about parameters. I have always known on some level that it is the restrictions that go a long way towards defining any given piece of art but this project really bought that fact home.
The parameters for these images were:
They had to pertain to a given letter of the alphabet
They had to be black and white
They had to look as if they were part of the same set
I am convinced that these restrictions made the project easier by limiting the choices. More importantly, I think that they made for a better end result. Having all three of the above conditions in place made the project better than just having having one or two of them. Just black and white or just a letter would still have been to broad, not narrowed down enough.
My take home from this is that I won’t see the setting of parameters/restrictions and artistic freedom as polar opposites but rather as complimentary parts of the process.
The next project
Another alphabet project is already in the works. For this one the theme will be color (big change of pace) and the start date is March 1st. I’ll do the same as I did for this one and post both here and on Google Plus at the same time.
